A head-on collision between an overloaded tricycle and a funeral car in Buenavista on Monday evening left two people dead and seven other injured.

A tricycle driver and one of his eight passengers were both killed in a head-on collision against a funeral car in the town of Buenavista at around 11 p.m. on Monday, police said.

SPO1 Alejandro Estorgio of the Buenavista police identified the fatalities who were both residents of Getafe as Wilfredo Turyon, 45, the driver, and Margarita Sucajel, 62.

The incident also led to the injury of Turyon’s one-year-old son, three other minors and three adults, Estorgio said.

According to Estorgio, Turyon suddenly lost control of the tricycle causing the vehicle to repeatedly swerve and smash into the incoming funeral car of Holy Name Funeral Homes driven by one Felipe Colangco.

Prior to the collision, Turyon avoided an under-construction segment of the road causing the overloaded vehicle to uncontrollably swerve, Estorgio said.

The area was dark and there was no visible signage indicating that the portion of the road was being repaired, he added.

Turyon’s sudden swerving eventually led to the collision which also resulted in the injury of seven of his other passengers.

Among the victims was the Opalla family comprised of Rey and Marissa and their three children aged 17, 14 and 7.

The other injured passengers were Marilou Sucajel and Turyon’s infant son.

All victims were rushed to a nearby hospital but Turyon was declared dead on arrival while Sucajel succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the health facility.

According to Estorgio, Turyon and the passengers of his ill-fated tricycle came from Getafe to join fiesta festivities before the fatal accident.

Meanwhile, the funeral car’s driver, Colangco, was taken into police custody pending the decision of the families of victims to either file charges or arrange an out-of-court settlement. (Allen Doydora)
