A Tagbilaran City official on  Monday raised concern over the continued use of rigged weighing scales in various public markets in the city despite authorities’ continued efforts to eradicate the illegal activity.

Tagbilaran City Market Administrator Jun Besa told dyRD Balita that authorities launched random inspections at markets but some vendors have managed to avoid being caught.

“Naay mga namaligyaay’g isda sa merkado nga kami ra puy bantayan,” Besa said.

Several surprise inspections however yielded weighing scales that have been tampered with to make products weigh more.

According to Besa, 20 weighing scales have been confiscated during recent inspections in Tagbilaran City.

A total of 12 of the said number of weighing scales were from the Manga Public Market.

Besa said that those caught with rigged weighing scales were fined P200 as mandated by a city ordinance.

City authorities, meanwhile, are also cannot force vendors to display price tags of their products.

According to Besa, they are only limited to reminding vendors to show prices for quicker transaction.

With local authorities inability to impose sanctions themselves, Besa called on the Department of Trade and Industry to conduct inspections to enforce policies on price tagging.

“Maayo unta og inig-inspeksyon naa ang taga DTI para nay masampulan,” Besa said. (rt)
