A 60-year-old man died on the spot after the sedan he was driving slammed into a roadside coconut tree along Barangay Tabalong in Dauis on Tuesday night.

Based on initial police investigation, victim Samson Arisola, a resident of Barangay Cogon in Tagbilaran City, was driving from Panglao to the city when he figured in the accident.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old motorcycle driver who was trailing Arisola suffered several cuts after he was hit by the latter’s tire which detached from the vehicle.

According to Dauis police chief SPO1 Gerald Luna, traffic investigators still continued their probe on the accident to determine the cause and if the tire detached before or after the impact.

Luna said that police traced areas traversed by Arisola to check if closed-circuit television cameras mounted near the road captured the events leading to the fatal car crash.

The police have also not yet discounted the possibility that another vehicle was involved in the crash and may have fled after the accident.

However, several residents told investigators that they saw Arisola’s vehicle zigzagging through the adjacent Barangay Looc in Panglao.

Other witnesses also said that the victim was speeding as he tried to overtake several vehicles, said Luna.

There was no nearby CCTV camera installed in the exact scene of the accident, he added. (Allen Doydora)
