The developer of a controversial road that would supposedly cut through a mangrove forest in Purok 4 barangay Duljo, Panglao stopped construction after environmental concerns were raised.
According to Mayor Leonilla Montero, residents in the area complained against the cutting of mangrove trees to make way for a cemented road prompting the developers to cease construction.
Based on reports aired by residents through DYRD Balita, the developers were intending to build a seafood restaurant in the middle of the small mangrove forest.
The mayor said that she immediately reported the incident to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources after finding out that the operation was illegal.
The operation is strictly prohibited particularly as the mangrove trees are located at a protected area, she added.
Montero noted that the developer was able to present a land title for the said lot but she said that building any type of establishment in the area is strictly prohibited.
It is likely that the developer will be ordered to demolish already cemented areas and plant mangroves in segments where they cut down trees. (Allen Doydora)
