A man and a woman aboard a motorcycle were killed instantly after a withered coconut tree fell on them along a provincial road in Mabini town on Saturday morning.
PO2 Ifor Yaun of the Mabini Police Station identified the victims as Jacel Dejalos, 24, and Rogelio Tutor, 47, both residents of Barangay Minol of said town.
According to Yaun, the victims were travelling from the central part of Mabini and heading towards Barangay La Union when the tree suddenly fell towards them as they passed by.
Dejalos and Tutor were severely injured due to the impact from the falling tree which reportedly cracked their skulls.
They both died on the spot due to their injuries, said Yaun.
The tree was 15 meters long, he added.
Based on police investigation, the roots were no longer robust enough to hold the tree upright. (A. Doydora)
