Woman dies after being struck by lightning in Panglao

A 35-year-old woman was killed after she was struck by lightning in Panglao amid heavy rains in the town at past 12 p.m. on Sunday.

The fatality, identified as Maria Montesa of Barangay Poblacion in Panglao was gathering seashells with her husband and neighbors near the coast in Sitio Daurong, Barangay Danao when she was hit by lightning.

Montesa was drenched in rainwater when lightning struck, said Master Sgt. Gregorio Perocho of the Panglao Police Station.

She was rushed to the Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital in Tagbilaran City but was declared dead on arrival.

“Nanginhas ni siya kauban iyang bana ug mga silingan pero wala ra sila ma-igo,” said Perocho.

Montesa was the second person to die after hit by lightning in the province in a week.

Alvin Salise, 27, of Barangay Magsaysay, Valencia died on the spot after he was also struck by lightning as witnessed by his companion, Gary Maglupay.

Salise was fishing near the shore using a wooden rod when he was fatally hit on November 17, while Maglupay who was fishing several meters away from the victim was uninjured. (A. Doydora)
