What is the mind? Ever heard of the phrase “You are what you think you are?” It is very true. But there is more to the mind than just thinking. And unless we understand how it works, we can lose the opportunity of utilizing this one great and special gift we all have been given.

We can compare the whole mind system to a computer – the brain is the hardware and the mind is the software. However, it doesn’t take us to understand the hardware component for us to use it, do we?

We can utilize any of the programs installed in any computer freely and effectively without getting affected by its physical component. However, we all know that any software cannot run without the hardware in as much as hardware is useless without software. Hence, brain and mind always go together and work intricately, and I believe there isn’t anything (and ever will be) yet invented by man that could surpass its marvel and sophistication.

As a system, the mind practically controls and coordinates everything – may it be automatic (breathing, heartbeat, etc.) or non-automatic functions (decisions, perception, attitude, etc.). Eastern countries believe that the mind is the seat of the soul.

Being that, it is where our deepest emotions lie, our will and decisions reside, our creativity, ingenuity, hopes and aspirations, as well as our fears and deadliest motives. Given this, it is very important that we nurture and use it well so it becomes our most valuable asset, otherwise, it can become our own enemy if not our worst nightmare.

How our mind functions is subject to many factors. For instance, if there is any glitch in the hardware, that is the brain, it affects how we think and behave. But more than the physical taint, the content and functioning of the mind is significantly affected by our experiences – may these be beautiful or traumatic.

Even when we are still in the womb of our mothers, our minds are already busy siphoning information in its environment, most especially the physical, psychological and emotional climate of Mommy. The moment we are out, that begins the storage of more data that become the foundation of how we interpret and appreciate our life experiences later on. The responsibility of inculcating memories with value in our young minds lies heavily on the people that surround us, our parents most importantly.

Now, how can we parents make sure that what we store is of the highest quality? We will answer that in the next article. For now, let it suffice that the mind is innately marvelous in its entirety (just look at any computer and its vast networks). But much of its power and utility is still dependent on the user. To experience the world at its best, let us harness it.
