Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Emeritus Jesus Tuquib, a native of Bohol, passed away at the age of 89 on Thursday after a prolonged illness, said the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
According to the CBCP, Tuquib who served as archbishop of Cagayan de Oro for 18 years died at the Maria Reyna-Xavier University Hospital at 5:30 p.m.
Tuquib was born in Clarin, Bohol on June 27, 1930 and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Tagbilaran in 1959.
According to Bishop Abet Uy of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, Tuquib’s funeral will be at the Cathedral of Saint Augustine in Cagayan de Oro at 9 a.m. on August 7, 2019.
In 1973, Tuquib was appointed the first bishop of Pagadian, a post he held until 1984 when he was named coadjutor archbishop of Cagayan de Oro, said the CBCP.
He assumed the pastoral governance of the archdiocese in 1988, replacing retired Archbishop Patrick Cronin. (rt)
