Lonnie Simon Weig was shot dead by a still unidentified gunman along a narrow path in a secluded area in Barangay Laya, Baclayon at dawn on Sunday.

The Bohol Provincial Police Office (BPPO) has made progress in its continued investigation on the killing of retired US Army soldier Lonnie Simon Weig, said a police official on Thursday.

According to BPPO chief Sr. Supt. Angeles Geñorga Jr, they are now pursuing a number of leads in their probe into the murder of Weig in Baclayon on Sunday.

“Meron po tayong pinupursue na imbestigasyon doon kaya lang hindi ko pa masyadong mai-reveal pa natin pero meron naman tayong mga leads doon,” said Geñorga.

A special investigation task group had earlier been launched by Geñorga for the hastened resolution of the murder case.

The BPPO director himself is leading the task group.

However, authorities are having difficulty in identifying the motive behind Weig’s killing as he had no known enemies while even his neighbors attested to his “kindness.”

“Lalaliman pa natin ang imbestigasyon para makita natin ang lahat ng anggulo,” Geñorga said.

Weig was shot dead at dawn on Sunday while he was jogging in a secluded area in Barangay Laya in Baclayon.

He sustained a gunshot wounds in his nape and the right side of his body.

Authorities have earlier disclosed that there were no spent bullet casings found in the crime scene.

Weig was from North Dakota who settled in Bohol after marrying a Filipina living in Baclayon. (R. Tutas)
