16th Ubi Festival is set on Jan. 27-29

ubiOnce again, the province of Bohol will showcase its favorite Ubi Kinampay and other Ubi varieties during the three-day 16th Ubi Festival which is scheduled on Jan. 27-29, 2016 at the Plaza Rizal, Tagbilaran City.

Beaming the theme “Industriya sa Ubing Bol-anon Ipadayon, Taliwala Sa Hulga sa Nagkausab nga Panahon,” a motorcade will kick off the activities which will be started from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), Capitol Annex Building, Dao, Tagbilaran City to Island City Mall (ICM) – J.A. Clarin-CPG Avenue down to the Bohol Cultural Center where the opening program will be held on Jan. 27, 2016.

In the program, Governor Edgar M. Chatto will give his inspirational message and the three solons: Representative Rene L. Relampagos (1st District), Rep. Erico Aristotle Aumentado (2nd Dist.) and Rep. Arthur C. Yap (3rd Dist.), and Director Angel C. Enriquez, Regional Executive Director, Department of Agriculture (DA) 7 will deliver their message of supports.

While Vice Governor Concepcion O. Lim will give her welcome address before assistant Provincial Agriculturist Larry M. Pamugas could introduce the participants and give the rationale of the activities.

Gov. Chatto together with Vice Gov. Lim, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Members, Provincial Agriculturist Liza M. Quirog, Bohol Schools Division Superintendent Wilfreda D. Bongalos, City Schools Division Supt. Virginia C. Zapanta will lead the giving of awards to the 2015 winners of Bahay Kubo and Gulayan sa Paaralan Contests.

Fe Curato, chairperson, committee on program said the Ribbon Cutting and the Opening of Exhibits on Ubi, Endemic Rootcrops and Sustainable Agriculture Products will be done at the Plaza Rizal right after the preliminary program at the Bohol Cultural Center.

Curato bared that there are several contests with big prizes at stake to include the following: Bugno sa Rondalla, Ubi Poster Making, Ubi Kuradang (farmer and student categories), Best Ubi Booth/Ubi Exhibit, Pinaka (the best quality Ubi Harvest), Ubi Rap/Jingle, Ubi Balak (farmer and student categories), and Highest Volume of Ubi Displayed for Sale.

Rosanna G. Lamdagan, chief-agribusiness Division-OPA, and Eleno L. Evangelista-Focal Person of the Ubi Festival ’16 asked the exhibitors to bring their Ubi tubers at the Plaza Rizal a day before the opening so that it would be easy for the contest committee on the highest volume of Ubi displayed for sale contest to weigh in their products.

They also asked to those who are interested to display their products during the festival to register early at the OPA for the tents reservations.

There are eight varieties of Ubi to be included in the Pinaka-contest to wit: Kinampay, Baligonhon, Kabus-ok, Tam-isan, Iniling, Binanag, Binato and Gimnay.

On the second day (Jan. 28, 2016), the activities will center at the Bohol Cultural Center (8:00am-12:00nn) for the Ubi Cuisine Contest to be sponsored by the Bohol Association of Hotel Resort and Restaurant (BAHRR) and the literary Musical Contests for Balak, Kuradang, Rap and Jingle, and Bugno sa Rondalla to be hosted by Jojo Ygay at the Plaza Rizal.

The closing and awarding program will be done at the Plaza Rizal in the afternoon of January 29, 2016 right after the Technology Updates on Ubi and other Rootcrops which is scheduled at 1 to 3 p.m.
