A reported armed man eluded arrest by quickly getting inside his car and speeding away nearly hitting a policeman after the authorities approached him to verify resident reports of a person wielding a gun in Barangay Tapal, Ubay yesterday afternoon.
According to P01 Dennis Dapiton of the Ubay Police Station, the responding team saw a man reportedly named Vergel Besas standing beside a blue Toyota Wigo without a plate number, but when police questioned the suspect, he did not respond and quickly went in his car instead to flee the scene.
After reaching several meters, the vehicle crashed into an electric post but it was still able to run for a few more meters before it conked out forcing the suspect and a female companion to leave the new car and take a habal-habal going toward Barangay Caigting of the said town.
The police recovered five packets of suspected shabu and two spent 9mm shells inside the car which was left open by the suspects.
They said that Besas has no known address based on the information shared by the witnesses who were able to identify the vehicle and its owner.
The police are currently conducting a follow-up investigation and have yet to identify Besas’ female companion.
Authorities will also look into the registration of the vehicle to find out who it belongs to. (with reports from Allen Doydora)
