Albuera, Leyte chief of police Chief Insp. Jovie Espinodo confirmed that the town’s jailed mayor Rolando Espinosa was gunned down inside his cell on Saturday.

Espinido said that the incident took place at 4:00 a.m. when operatives of the Crime Investigation and Detection Group of Region 8 served a search warrant against Espinosa.

The court ordered the raid of the mayor’s cell but Espinosa reportedly resisted the operation through an unspecified manner leading to the shooting.

Espinosa who was jailed at the Leyte Sub-provincial Jail in Baybay City was facing charges for illegal possession of firearms and illegal drugs.

President Rodrigo Duterte once blamed Espinosa for the proliferation of illegal drugs in Bohol.

The mayor was arrested last October 4.

Hi son, alleged Visayas drug lord Kerwin Espinosa, was also nabbed by law enforcers in Abu Dhabi last month.
