A woman believed to be suffering from a mental illness was blinded by her niece after she was shot with an improvised gun in Carmen on Sunday morning.
Based on a police report, suspect Albert Perez, 21, accidentally shot his aunt 41-year-old Lucina Karaan with the homemade pistol straight in the eye causing it to rupture.
According to Carmen police, the incident happened at around 7 a.m. while the victim was planting root crops at her home in Barangay La Victoria of said town.
Perez was reportedly testing his improvised gun which was loaded with a marble when he accidentally hit Karaan with a stray bullet.
Based on the suspect’s statement, he was aiming at a coconut but the marble ricocheted towards the victim.
Karaan was rushed to a hospital where physicians declared that the injure eye had been blinded.
Meanwhile, Perez voluntarily surrendered to authorities following the incident.
He is currently detained at the lock-up jail of the Carmen police pending the filing of a reckless imprudence resulting to physical injury case against him.
Karaan is now in stable condition. (Allen Doydora)
