An 8-year-old girl drowned in a creek swollen by torrential rains after rampaging water swept her away in Dagohoy on Tuesday morning.
Victim Mary (not her real name), a grade 1 pupil and resident of Barangay Esperanza, Dagohoy, was reportedly flushed by flood as she attempted to cross a creek in the said village, police said.
According to Dagohoy police chief Sr. Insp. Marcelino Mejia, the drowning incident happened at past 7 a.m.
The victim was on her way home after classes were suspended as continuous rainfall due to a low pressure area hit most parts of the province, Mejia said.
Based on initial police investigation, Maria slipped as she tried to cross a creek that has been flooded due to relentless rains, and was then swept away by current.
A witness tried to save Maria but was too far away from the creek during the incident.
Maria’s lifeless body was found the next day.
Her remains were discovered by barangay tanods in the nearby village of Hibali. (A. Doydora)
