The sister of detained former Provincial Board Member Niño Rey Boniel has been appointed as his replacement by President Rodrigo Duterte.

Vierna “Mimi” Boniel Maglasang was sworn into office by Senior Board Member Venzencio Arcamo at the new Capitol building on Friday, less than two months before her brother’s term expires on June 30.

Maglasang’s takeover of the post came after an appointment letter from Malacañang dated March 22, 2019 was released through the Department of Interior and Local Government on April 29, 2019.

In her inaugural speech, Maglasang thanked Duterte for approving her appointment and vowed to continue the programs and plans of her younger brother.

Maglasang’s inauguration was witnessed by Vice Governor Dionisio Balite and Board Members Abel Damalerio, Ricky Masamayor, Tomas Abapo Jr, Agapito Avenido, Jade Bautista, Elpidio Jala, Dionisio Victor Balite, Gloria Gementiza, Romulo Cepedoza, and Christian Victor Bolos III.

Following the short ceremony, Maglasang joined her first Sangguniang Panlalawigan session which was attended by supporters—her mother Marina Boniel, Second District Representative Aris Aumentado and Bien Unido Mayor Rene Borenaga.

Maglasang is running for Board Member in the second district. If elected, it will be her first official term as a provincial lawmaker.

Her appointment stemmed from Boniel’s arrest for allegedly killing his wife, former Bien Unido Mayor Gisela Boniel. (R. Tutas)
