A man who admitted to stealing donation boxes from churches in Tagbilaran City was arrested by police on Thursday night.

Lieutenant Col. Christopher Navida, chief of the Tagbilaran City Police Station said that the suspect, John Jacob Oppus, 25, was turned over to the police by barangay tanods (village watchmen) after he was caught trying to break into the room of a priest at the San Antonio de Padua Church in Barangay Poblacion III at past 7:45 p.m.

According to Navida, Oppus was not caught stealing anything when he was accosted by barangay tanods.

Oppus however, during interrogation, admitted to police to being behind the series of burglaries at churches where he and a certain “Boboy” took donation boxes.

The burglars hit the St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Cogon Shrine, Mansasa Church and Baclayon Church.

Navida said that Oppus might be released as no one has filed a case against him prompting the police chief to call on victims of the suspect to lodge complaints. (A. Doydora)
